My philosophy is influenced by
the theories of both Piaget and Vygotsky. I believe children
learn by interacting with their environment and with others
to enhance their development. The experiences incorporated
into the curriculum need to be relevant to each child so s/he
is interested in participating. When this occurs children increase
their knowledge and understanding. I believe that I provide
a developmentally appropriate curriculum that incorporates the
children's interests and developmental needs.
Children should be encouraged to
actively be involved in their own learning and adults should
be accessible to provide support and guidance. Vygotsky believed
that adults are able to assist children in their acquisition
of new knowledge through interacting, talking and assisting
children to solve a problem; this expands the child's learning.
I believe that I facilitate the children's learning through
planning experiences that are tailored to meet certain children's
needs and interests. I provide an environment that has
different size play spaces to encourage individuals, small groups
and large groups of children to interact.
I place a high importance in establishing
relationships with children, parents, staff and the committee
of management. I will develop strong relationships with
the children built on mutual trust and respect. Establishing
a rapport with the children assists the children with making
the separation from their parents into the kindergarten environment.
It also provides an environment where the children feel comfortable
and this is reflected in their learning. My relationship
with the children is enhanced by my relationship with the children's
families. This allows for an open and honest two-way exchange
of communication about the child and their lives. I will
consult with parents and use their knowledge about their child
and involve parents in decisions about what is in the best interests
for their child.
It is vital to establish a good working relationship with other staff members and the committee of management. Effective communication is important when working in close proximity with other members of a team. Each person needs to feel that his/her contributions are valued so information is exchanged. I strive to communicate openly and positively with other members of the team, so we are all working towards the best for the children and families in the kindergarten.
